We hope that you will extend your stay at the Harbor View Hotel so that you can experience some of the great things Martha’s Vineyard has to offer. Here are 7 of our favorite activities and places to visit.

#7 Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard – Clam Chowder

Enjoy the classic New England dish Clam Chowder at one of the best restaurants in Edgartown, The Seafood Shanty. In addition to leaving satisfied, you’ll have experienced incredible sea views. They also serve sushi, sandwiches and many more seafood dishes.

#6 Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard – Martha`s Vineyard Museum

Explore Martha’s Vineyard Museum and learn all about the island’s history, which dates back to colonial times. It has exhibits inside and out, so whatever the weather you`ll find something interesting, for example:

  • “Tomorrow’s History: 175 Years of the Vineyard Gazette”, which celebrates the local paper.
  • “Catboat Vanity”, a floating exhibit.
  • “The Challenge of the Sea” shares lots of stories and artifacts from the local waters and the North Atlantic Ocean

#5 Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard – Go Sailing

Sailing and Martha’s Vineyard go together like bread and butter. An afternoon sail with Mad Max from Edgartown marina will allow you to explore the harbors and the pretty coastline of Martha’s Vineyard. Some of the sights you’ll see include Edgartown Lighthouse, Outer Harbor and the pristine blue waters of the Nantucket Sound.

There are two possible routes available and they are dictated by wind direction:

  1. Follows the sandy coast of Chappaquiddick Island on to Cape Pogue Lighthouse;
  2. Heads towards Oak Bluffs, home to the old-fashioned gingerbread cottages.

#4 Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard – Chappaquiddick

True crime fans should take the ferry from Edgartown to the island of Chappaquiddick, where Ted Kennedy famously got into a car accident, which killed Mary Jo Kopechne, more than 50 years ago. This tragic story, to this day, still has untold truths and secrets. To find out more read this article in USA Today or watch the movie Chappaquiddick (2018).

During the fall, the colors that fill the island also make it a beautiful place to explore. As there aren’t any shops or eateries nearby, pack your lunch or at least some snacks and drinks.

#3 Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard – Fill up on Fudge

Murdick’s Homemade Fudge is likely to be the best fudge you will EVER taste! They make 14 delicious flavors of fudge including Vanilla Pecan, Rocky Road, Peanut Butter and Cape Cod Cranberry, all using a recipe that dates back to 1887.

Arrive early so that you can see the fudge being made, it’s an interesting and mouth-watering experience. That way you will return home with a great memory as well as a box of fudge. Win-win!

If you don´t like fudge, check out the many delights at Ice Cream Candy Bazaar.

#2 Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard – Island Alpaca Company

A short drive away from Edgartown is a must-visit, for any animal lover. The Island Alpaca Company is a totally fun day out, where you can get up close and personal with the furry animals.

There are lots of activities to do on the farm. But to get your full dose of alpacas and a hands on experience book the Alpaca Discovery tour.  This behind the scenes look includes ‘barn chores, feeding and halter training.’ You´ll also get an opportunity to meet all the members of the family including the babies.

Great news, a baby alpaca is due to be born in September! So, when you visit in October you will be one of the first to see him or her.

#1 Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard – Beach Day

Visiting a beach in Martha`s Vineyard is a must, no matter the weather. There are plenty to choose from, but for a beach rich in history visit Inkwell Beach, in Oaks Bluffs. Since the late 1800´s, the beach has been popular with the African-American community, from the elite to the working class. Its name ‘Inkwell’ was thought to be a derogatory name, given by the white people that lived there. However, today it is a place of pride, perhaps thanks to the ‘Harlem Renaissance writers’  and Black elite that visited beginning in the summers of 1920’s, seeking relaxation and inspiration.

Summer is obviously the most desirable season, but spring and fall can also bring some memorable and sunny days. Don´t leave Martha’s Vineyard without getting a bit of sand between your toes.  If it’s a little chilly, bring a blanket to watch the tide pass in and out, add a touch of romance by watching a sunrise or a sunset.

With these ‘things to do,’ you can easily turn your couples retreat into an extended vacation. We look forward to seeing you in October. Reserve your place at the Reconnect & Unwind: Love Wins! LGBTQ+ Weekend now, as space is limited.
